Gru for Mayor

City design is a large, complicated topic that spans multiple disciplines and political issue. It is perhaps one of the largest responsibilities of our municipal government, however, Toronto is clearly not a bastion of good city design.

Whether you look at our housing, street design, transit system, or utility infrastructure, what you see is a legacy of corruption and profit-seeking placed above the needs of our communities.

The Gru campaign seeks to challenge our extremely poor city design and begin the process of repairing the damage done to Toronto over the years by corporate lobbying.

Many other cities around the world have come back from worse, and we can too; all we have to do is start.

Egg Hunt

A creative romp through Toronto’s lesser-known history took place Monday, April 10, 2023.

Did you know that Toronto welcomed almost 40,000 Irish refugees when its existing population numbered about half that?

Peruse the remaining clues and see if you can match the location to take a trip less travelled through our City.

Highlights & Hints

Absolutely gorgeous view
In the shadow of the towers
Near the water
Just down from the flowers.

Figures in despair
Line this stunning site
Reaching up to the sky
In misery and fright

Here we welcomed thousands
When we were just small
And treated strangers better
Than we treat residents, all

You saw the images. Everyone did.
Horses. Pepper spray
Batons
Even kettling on that day.

Until that day no one knew this name
Or the place
Now the name lives in infamy
Of beatings and mace

You’ll find this egg
Where people used to live
No one has lived there since that day
Too much pain and too many f$&@s to give

More

The city’s most beautiful flowers
Are found in this park
As are the city’s most beautiful people
Who live in tents in the dark.

Almost daily, police come by
Raze those tents, take them away
It means beginning from scratch
At the start of every day.

Look up at the trees
So beautiful and free
And ask yourself why
The blue tent is key

Many mayors in Toronto,
And she’s the one here
Find her tent and find the egg
And say hello, she’s a dear

The Speaker recognizes
The councillor from Nowhere
The Councillor rises to thank
Someone for their hard work and care

There’s always lots going on
But never an increase in tax
No one unhoused is recognized
They get kicked out in packs

You’ll find this egg
In the heart of Toronto
In more ways than one
Get yourself there pronto

more

At the beginning of corona
People needed safety
They got something else
Something that felt a bit cagey

It was to be respite
A place for weary heads
It became a flashpoint
For fear and dread instead

Sirens and ambulances
In the middle of midtown
Eventually led to
The hotel being shut down
