You’re at the Roehampton Hotel, part of Josh Matlow’s ward, where the city warehoused unhoused people during the early days of the pandemic.
Like most of the shelter hotels, it was disastrously managed. 111 people lost their lives in 2022 in shelter hotels.
This is not our Toronto. We know that the safest unhoused communities are those with the most resources and access, not those with the most rules and punitive policies that hurt residents.
Not to mention the city is now closing 5 hotels in the coming months, which will leave thousands on the streets again.
At least one candidate believes strongly that our City budget should focus on meeting the basic needs of Torontonians, including housing, food, medication, and transportation. The current city budget for social services is less than $20 million to feed, house, and clothe over 10,000 people.
Matlow says he respects people w/ lived experience of homelessness and their expertise, but he’s been ineffective at best at bringing those voices to the table. It’s time to meet unhoused Torontonians where they’re at, with the services they need to find some stability in their lives. Only one candidate is saying take $116 million from the current budget to cover social service.
Who’s the candidate pushing for this? Meet Gru.
We’re going to be announcing the launch of Gru’s mayoral campaign at 129 Peter St at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 11. We hope you can join us! Bring some friends who care about real social Justice in this city!
