You’re at Toronto City Hall, former home of John Tory and current home of Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie.
Since Rob Ford’s election in 2010, city government has decided austerity budgets are the way to go. No raising of taxes. No new revenue streams. And we have all watched as the city has started to stagnate and crumble. We’ve all watched tent cities and encampments proliferate like they did in the ‘80s and during the Harris years.
No more. The city must take care of its needs. That’s why we are recommending a revised city budget that focuses on making the city liveable for everyone. We don’t want to abandon people to poverty and homelessness. We can’t.
Can it be done without taxes and additional revenue streams? Nothing is off the table. We need to focus on what services are needed to make this City work, and then fund those services, no matter the momentary pain. One campaign thinks much of this can be done without raising additional taxes or creating new revenue streams.
By cancelling the Gardiner and diverting $115 million a year from the police budget for the next three years, then combining available resources with possible new revenue streams, this city becomes liveable and functional again.
You may be asking yourself – why didn’t this happen before? The political will was not there.
It will be now.
Who’s the candidate pushing for this? Meet Gru.
We’re going to be announcing the launch of Gru’s mayoral campaign at 129 Peter St at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 11. We hope you can join us! Bring some friends who care about real social Justice in this city!
