You’re at Allen Gardens, one of the largest encampments in the city.
One of the residents, Lynn, has lived here for years. They call her the mayor. She is beloved. Carried the Olympic torch years ago.
Lynn just wants stable housing and somewhere to sleep at night without fear of passers-by destroying her tent.
It’s very hard to do this in an encampment. It’s very hard to be an older woman in an encampment. But it’s still better than the city shelters, which is why there’s a call for decriminalization of survival ‘camping’ on public lands.
What that leads to is an ability to bring services to encampments that do pop up without having to worry about the cops harassing the unhoused. This is literally “Meet people where they are” as City policy, in order to start the process of finding acceptable housing offers directly from people’s current situations.
Who’s the candidate pushing for this? Meet Gru.
We’re going to be announcing the launch of Gru’s mayoral campaign at 129 Peter St at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 11. We hope you can join us! Bring some friends who care about real social Justice in this city!
